Has anyone ever encountered aurora (northern lights) while flying?

not in my plane, but saw it once while flying commercial. The great circle route takes you pretty close to the pole. It was the highlight of the flight for everyone. Everybody was crowding the windows on the right side. The pilots even turned off the cabin lights so we can all bask in the beautiful green-ish light that was illuminating the cabin slightly. It was great. Glad I was lucky enough to see it from a plane.|||Yes, flying a B52 at high altitude at 2AM . Aurora was so bright we could read the checklist by it. St Elmo's Fire on the canopy and over the wings. Unforgettable.|||FYI, aurora can be north or south. Aurora Borealis is north, Aurora Australis is south.|||Yes. Sometimes in the seattle area you can see it even at lower altitudes (1,000' AGL)|||No, but I saw it plenty of times while living in Anchorage.|||Yup, sure have.|||No,but that must be really something to see.|||im jealous|||no not ever|||what is it like i've never seen an Aura in my life
