Is it possible to create an artificial Aurora Borealis?

I have to do an end of course project for my physics class. I was hoping that I could create an artificial Aurora Borealis and explain why it happens and how it relates to physics.|||Look at a Tesla coil.

That explains alot, and raises questions that are inspired to learn.|||well, since you are a physics student, you better hit those books and let us all know how things went.|||I suppose if you went far enough away from the Earth and shot enough charged particles at the Earth it might work. However....I don't think you can do that.
